Cisco and Sensity Systems Strategic Relationship Delivers Internet of Things Applications Platform

Cisco Utilizes Sensity’s Multi-Sensor Network Platform to Create Smart Citizen and City Operation Services.

Cisco and Sensity Systems, the pioneer of Light Sensory Networks (LSN), today announced that the two companies have entered into a strategic relationship that utilizes Sensity’s NetSense platform as a foundation for Cisco’s City Infrastructure Management (CIM) software. As part of the agreement, Cisco joins Sensity’s NetSense Partner Program to create a joint solution that converts city lighting infrastructure into a distributed sensing platform for Smart City applications, such as smart parking, lighting, retail analytics, and public safety and security.

“Our strategic relationship with Sensity marks a defining moment in our journey of innovation in the Internet of Things and the Internet of Everything,” said Wim Elfrink, Cisco EVP of industry solutions and chief globalisation officer.

“We share a common vision with Sensity, recognizing that smart lighting is just the tip of the iceberg. This new platform will create enormous potential for cities as they continue to roll out a platform that can deliver multiple applications and services, all using a common set of sensors, analytics and network for greater productivity, efficiency, and public safety.”

Hugh Martin, chairman and CEO of Sensity, said:

“There are over four billion high-wattage lights in the world being converted to LEDs, which is a unique opportunity to transform the existing lighting infrastructure into a distributed sensor network.”

“We are pleased that Cisco is utilizing our Light Sensory Network vision embodied by our NetSense platform. One platform, one network in an existing infrastructure will make IoT a reality, globally. By combining our sensors and analytics and Cisco’s wireless communications, embedded in LED light fixtures, as a distributed sensing platform, we can deliver on the promise of IoT.”

The companies’ joint solution utilizes Sensity’s sensor nodes, integrated into Cisco’s City Infrastructure Management (CIM) software. It seamlessly embeds sensors—including video sensors with analytics—within LED lighting infrastructure. The data from Light Sensory Network is exposed through Cisco’s CIM APIs, enabling application developers and service providers to deliver a wide array of Smart City applications. The Cisco ecosystem of application and services partners have started to develop such applications, some of which were demonstrated in Chicago Internet of Things World Forum (IoTWF).

Internet of Things World Forum Demonstration – October 14-16 – Chicago

Showcasing its first multi-application platform for IoT, Cisco, Sensity and Chicago city officials have deployed a Light Sensory Network at the Internet of Things World Forum this week. The conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and was the starting point for the IoT World Forum Walking Tours. Tours highlighted how the IoT is providing innovative solutions to real-world problems, including public safety, transportation, parking and energy efficiency.
