Eseye’s GSM Enabled Utility Monitor “Shoebill” Scoops European Smart Metering Award

Telit and Eseye Collaborate on Award Winning Utility Monitor Based on GL865 Module Family

Eseye, an innovator in total m2m solutions for industries including cleantech, environmental and utility segments, and Telit Wireless Solutions (AIM: TCM), a leading global provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services today announced Eseye’s product Shoebill has won Home Energy Monitoring Award at the 2013 European Smart Metering Awards. The awards recognize excellence in Smart Metering acknowledging players in defining roles moving the industry forward. Shoebill is Eseye’s entry-level dual-current-clamp energy utility monitor equipped with Telit’s GL865 family of GSM/GPRS modules.

Telit’s collaboration with Eseye touches on other products including the Pelican, a GSM gateway for gas, water and electricity meters also equipped with modules from the GL865 family. The two companies continue exploring expansion possibilities in their cooperation as the pace continues to quicken with the utilities in their move to upgrade ageing infrastructure.

Eseye ShoebillThe Shoebill is a compact, fully self-contained electricity monitor which uses GSM/GPRS cellular networks to connect the utility or other customer to the consumer premises. The product takes readings every 30 minutes and can report these over the cellular network in programmable intervals. Its electrical current clamps can handle up to 32 amps per phase with a 125A variant available for heavy-duty commercial and industrial applications. The Shoebill is available in a wall-mount on standard 2-module DIN enclosure. Both versions include Li-ion battery backup and can be installed without service outage for the consumer. The Shoebill is a cost effective alternative to costly smart meters, allowing energy managers to quickly establish a panoramic view of their energy consumption profile thus promoting energy conservation and enabling analysis and detection of potentially problematic areas.

The GL865 family of GSM/GPRS modules applied in Eseye’s products is comprised of dual and quad band variants. This allows Eseye to price its products for regional markets at a lower level since dual band modules carry a lower cost. For global distribution, Eseye integrated the GL865-QUAD which includes all bands required for operation in any global market. The GL865 family is packaged with LLC castellation technology ideal for low-density electronics design reducing the Bill of Materials (BOM) as well as manufacturing costs for Eseye. Embedded TPC/IP stack and Python programming script language interpreter allow application development and maintenance to be significantly streamlined.
