Oberthur Technologies, one of the world’s largest providers of security, identification solutions and services based on smart card technologies, today announced its partnership with Telecom Italia in Italy to provide a state-of-the-art solution for operators to download subscription credentials to an embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) within a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) module.
The module can be integrated into a vehicle for example, to provide mobile automotive services.
The partnership was founded on the selection of Oberthur Technologies to provide SIM cards to support the ambitious M2M expansion plans of Telecom Italia. The partnership is built on both companies’ commitment to and implication in “mAutomotive”, the GSMA Connected Living projects aimed at fostering growth of the global M2M ecosystem.
Oberthur Technologies will provide its Subscription Manager solution and the Embedded SIM (Device Identity Module®¹ for M2M SIM card) for the M2M automotive telematic systems. The solution enables the secure download of the contracted Mobile Network Operator’s (MNO) credentials onto the Embedded SIM, at the first stage of the carmaker logistics process. It also enables subsequent updates, for example in the car showroom. The Embedded SIM specifications produced by mobile operators working within the GSMA ensure that MNO credentials are handled with the highest standards of privacy and security.
With this automotive solution powered by Oberthur Technologies, Telecom Italia is paving the way for major automotive deployments including E-call, the European Union regulation requirement by which all vehicles must be connected to the mobile network in case of emergency.
Vincent Guitard, Marketing Director M2M & OEM at Oberthur Technologies:
“Thanks to its knowledge and leadership in SIM-based solutions and security devices, Oberthur Technologies is able to address new vertical segments such as M2M. The work we have completed with the GSMA and its mobile operator members is paving the way for the expansion of this exciting market.”
“We are moving into a new phase for the mobile industry, where we expect to see an explosion of connected modules. Telecom Italia strongly believes that this is a fast growing and promising market and that to address it, we need in some areas, to evolve consolidated technologies. Partnering with best-in-class players is part of our strategy, as well as actively contributing to GSMA and standardization activities in order to have an interoperable and globally adoptable solution” said Lucy Lombardi, SVP Industry Relations at Telecom Italia.
The Subscription Manager solution and the Embedded SIM are on display at the Mobile World Congress 2013 at Barcelona, Spain from the 25th to the 28th of February 2013. Come and visit Oberthur Technologies’ booth (Hall 6-stand 6C81) to discover their comprehensive M2M range.
