AT&T Continues to Fuel Growth of the Internet of Things with Launch of New Developer-Friendly Managed Service

AT&T Introduces Tools to Further Simplify IoT Solution Development and a Growing Ecosystem of Companies Embracing the M2X Data Service; Offers M2X Connection Kit to Developers at the 2015 AT&T Developer Summit.

At the 2015 AT&T Developer Summit, AT&T announced the commercial availability of the M2X Data Service, its first Internet of Things (IoT) managed service for developers, as well as new design tools aimed at making it easier for Enterprise Developers to create new IoT solutions.

Beginning today, enterprise customers can purchase commercial plans for the M2X Data Service, a carrier-grade cloud-based data store that makes it easier to collect, analyze, and share time-series data from connected devices.

Mike Troiano, vice president, Industrial Internet of Things, AT&T Mobility, said:

“In the Industrial IoT world, connecting devices and machines to the Internet only has value if you can effectively store, analyze and leverage the data that’s being transmitted. Our M2X Data Service allows businesses of all sizes to manage and better utilize the data they collect from connected devices.”

Since launching last year in beta, several companies have begun integrating and using the M2X Data Service, including:

  • Emerson: Emerson and its partner Manitowoc Foodservice are working with AT&T to bring customers new capabilities based on the M2X Data Service, including a commercial kitchen proof of concept shown during the Developer Summit keynote.
  • Rockwell Automation: Rockwell Automation and AT&T are collaborating to deliver cellular solutions that help enable Rockwell Automation customers to securely collect, manage and take action on data from industrial equipment located in plants and remote sites around the globe.
  • Ericsson: The Ericsson Service Innovation Framework is now integrated with the M2X Data Service. The two companies are also working on future integration between Ericsson’s VEN (Virtualized Enterprise Network) solution and AT&T’s next generation of IoT Services.
  • Samsung: Samsung and AT&T are creating a TiZen device library for the M2X Data Service so developers can easily store and use time-series data collected from applications on the Samsung Gear S Watch and other TiZen based wearables.
  • WiPro: AT&T and WiPro are jointly developing and delivering next-generation IoT solutions to enterprise customers. Wipro, a market leader in IoT, is adapting its key applications including Heavy Equipment and Asset TrackingTM (HEAT) and SmartMiningTM to jointly market with AT&T. WiPro is also an early adopter of and participant in AT&T’s cloud based fully managed time-series data storage services, M2X.
  • Numerex: AT&T and Numerex are developing oil and gas solutions to optimize oil and chemical distribution and remote site equipment monitoring leveraging the AT&T M2X platform.

In addition to the M2X Data Service, the company also unveiled a Beta Version of AT&T Flow Designer at the Developer Summit Hackathon over the weekend. Developed at the AT&T Foundry innovation center, AT&T Flow Designer is a new cloud-based visual development tool aimed at speeding the development time required to build new IoT applications. Typical IoT-focused solutions can be complex as they require application integrations at the device, network and application layers. Together, the M2X Data Service and AT&T Flow Designer relieve the enterprise developer of many of these complexities–all in a scalable, reliable and highly secure environment.

“You can really see the value of AT&T Flow Designer in a development sprint like the Hackathon”, said Joe Bossalini, an AT&T product development engineer and one of the designated mentors at the event. “We had developers coming in with almost no IoT development experience and walking out 48 hours later with polished prototypes.”

With a continued focus on reducing barriers for enterprises and developers who want to take advantage of the Industrial Internet of Things, AT&T is offering a free M2X Connection Kit to developers at the 2015 AT&T Developer Summit. The kit, which provides developers with the powerful AT&T Control Center platform powered by Jasper for building connected devices and services, includes three test SIMs and 6 months of free data service that can be used for device and solution testing.

AT&T’s commitment to the Industrial IoT is exemplified by the AT&T Foundry innovation centers, including the IoT-focused facility in Plano, Texas. The facility prototypes new IoT technologies and platforms for business customers to help them quickly bring unique IoT solutions to market.

AT&T is a global leader in M2M communications. As of Q3 2014, AT&T had over 18 million connected devices on its network and had certified more than 2,200 types of connected devices.
