UPC (Switzerland) is cooperating with ELEKTRON for the Internet of Things

UPC is launching tailor-made solutions for the “Internet of Things” (IoT) together with ELEKTRON, the Swiss technology company in the energy and infrastructure market.

The partners will be the first provider in Switzerland to offer the Wireless Smart Utility Networks technology.

UPC has long encouraged innovations in the ICT sector. The latest solution in this area is called Wireless Smart Utility Networks – aka Wi-SUN.

“I am delighted that together with ELEKTRON we are able to launch what is currently the best IoT communications solution in Switzerland,” says Stephan Ging, Director Solution Business Sales and IoT expert at UPC.

Wi-SUN is compatible with over 89 million devices around the world today and has proven itself to be a forward-looking solution. From now on, Swiss energy companies, cities and municipalities can also benefit from the best of all IoT communications solutions around the world for the first time and develop smart cities.

“We are convinced that Wi-SUN is the perfect companion to UPC’s powerful broadband infrastructure,” says Enrico Baumann, CEO of ELEKTRON. Wi-SUN is already in use in millions of applications around the world for controlling street lighting and reading electricity, gas and water meters.

“As the Swiss market leader in street lighting, we see a great opportunity for energy suppliers to create their own IoT network with the Wi-SUN technology and operate smart metering and smart lighting independently and irrespective of manufacturer.”

Possible thanks to mesh

Wireless Smart Utility Networks is a low-cost, energy-efficient and secure communications technology which is particularly suitable for critical infrastructures. Like wireless LAN, it is an established IEEE standard (802.xx), which guarantees the compatibility of all devices used thanks to the Wi-SUN Alliance. The manufacturer-independent standard offers the possibility of linking a large number of complex applications, such as smart lighting, parking systems and traffic management while requiring minimal infrastructure.

Furthermore, Wi-SUN is currently the only Wireless IoT communications solution in Switzerland based on IPv6 meshed network technology. “Mesh” makes countless redundant and short connections between the devices possible, which results in very high stability of the network.

An additional advantage is the bandwidth and latency time: “With up to 300 Kbps bandwidth, Wi-SUN is six times faster than the competitor network, LoRa. And at 0.02 seconds, the latency time of Wi-SUN is significantly lower than these other technologies,” confirms Stephan Ging. Swiss smart cities will therefore obtain even more power for their future with Wi-SUN from UPC and ELEKTRON.
