Iridium and SKYWAVE, an ORBCOMM company, are integrating Iridium Short Burst Data services into SKYWAVE satellite IoT terminals to support globally connected heavy equipment. The partnership is aimed at OEMs that need to extend telematics and service platforms beyond cellular coverage.

For heavy equipment manufacturers, connectivity is an ongoing operational challenge rather than a simple network-design exercise. Equipment regularly moves between construction sites, mines, agricultural operations, ports and other remote environments, often passing in and out of terrestrial coverage. Despite these changing conditions, customers expect continuous asset visibility, remote diagnostics and reliable service wherever their machines are deployed.

That operating reality is the context for a new partnership between Iridium Communications and SKYWAVE, an ORBCOMM company. The companies are working to combine Iridium’s low Earth orbit satellite network and Short Burst Data services with SKYWAVE’s multi-network management capabilities and OGx IoT platform, with an initial focus on heavy equipment OEMs.

The technical detail that matters is where the integration is happening. Iridium SBD is being embedded directly into SKYWAVE satellite IoT terminals, giving SKYWAVE’s OEM customers the option to use Iridium’s LEO satellite network as part of a broader connectivity framework spanning satellite, cellular and Wi-Fi.

That makes the announcement distinct from a typical satellite IoT reseller or roaming-style connectivity agreement. The proposition is not simply that another satellite network is available to equipment makers. It is that Iridium connectivity is being incorporated into SKYWAVE’s terminal and orchestration environment, allowing satellite to sit alongside terrestrial options under a managed industrial IoT architecture.

Why heavy equipment is a demanding IoT category

Heavy equipment telematics has matured well beyond basic location reporting. OEMs increasingly use connected data to support remote monitoring, diagnostics, predictive maintenance, service workflows and the modernization of installed fleets. The challenge is that those use cases depend on continuity across uneven network conditions, not just on a cellular modem performing well in covered areas.

In this market, network fragmentation can become an operational problem. A machine that is visible on a cellular network in one location but unavailable in another creates gaps in service history, delays fault detection and complicates customer support. For OEMs trying to offer consistent digital services globally, connectivity architecture becomes part of the product experience.

The Iridium-SKYWAVE approach addresses that issue by positioning satellite as an integrated path within a multi-network environment rather than as a separate fallback designed and managed in isolation. A practical implication is that OEM engineering teams may be able to reduce the number of bespoke communications paths they need to manage across product lines and regions, although application design will still need to account for the low-data nature of services such as SBD.

That trade-off is important. Short-burst satellite messaging is well suited to status updates, alerts, operating parameters and other compact telemetry payloads. It is not a substitute for high-bandwidth connectivity. For industrial IoT architects, the value lies in matching the right data to the right channel: cellular or Wi-Fi where available, satellite where coverage and resilience are more important than bandwidth.

Implications for OEMs and the wider IoT ecosystem

For equipment manufacturers, the partnership could support more consistent connected-service offerings across markets where machines operate beyond reliable terrestrial networks. It may also help with legacy fleet modernization, a specific use case identified by the companies, by giving OEMs another route to extend connectivity capabilities to equipment already deployed in the field.

For system integrators and industrial solution providers, the announcement reinforces a broader shift in IoT architecture: connectivity decisions are moving up from individual modems and SIMs toward orchestration layers that can select and manage multiple networks. That matters in sectors such as construction, agriculture, oil and gas, transportation and maritime, where assets may not remain inside one network footprint for long.

Connectivity providers should also note the positioning. Satellite IoT is increasingly being presented not as a niche alternative to cellular, but as a component of hybrid connectivity designs. In this case, Iridium contributes pole-to-pole LEO coverage and SBD services, while SKYWAVE contributes the managed networking layer, terminals and application enablement environment used by industrial customers.

The companies said the integration is underway. They have not announced commercial availability timing, deployment scale or named OEM customers. The initial target is heavy equipment, but the underlying architecture is described as applicable to other industrial verticals where assets operate globally, remotely or outside terrestrial coverage.

For IoT decision makers, the key takeaway is not that satellite connectivity is being added to another platform. It is that satellite, cellular and Wi-Fi are being treated as parts of the same industrial service fabric. In remote equipment markets, that architectural choice may matter as much as the network itself.
