Telit Wireless Solutions, a leading global vendor of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services, today announced the achievement of ISO/TS16949 automotive industry certification beyond manufacturing, now including R&D and support functions worldwide, rare among m2m module manufacturers.
Since 2010, Telit has incorporated ISO/TS16949 assembly lines and processes and now joins a small group of top-tier M2M module manufacturers to achieve the stringent certification at a corporate level for its key R&D and corporate offices. Broad corporate ISO/TS16949 certification is not uncommon in the automotive electronics industry, yet most industry players holding this level of certification manufacture their automotive products from company-owned and operated manufacturing facilities. By achieving this degree of certification with partnered manufacturing, Telit joins a very small group of automotive electronics suppliers which have been able to demonstrate certification-compliant quality control and process management despite the daunting complexities inherent to contracted manufacturing.
Telit’s ISO/TS16949 facilities now include Trieste, Italy certified for R&D and support functions; Raleigh, NC, USA and Shenzen, China certified for support functions; and manufacturing locations with ML&S and BYD in Greifswald, Germany and Huizhou-Guangdong, China respectively.
ISO/TS16949 is a technical specification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published in March 2002 as ISO/TS 16949:2002 by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), a group comprised of representatives from the automotive manufacturers, and the “Technical Committee” of the ISO. Its objective is the development of a quality management system that provides for continuous improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and reduction of variation and waste in the automotive supply chain. It is based on the more popular and generic ISO 9001 specification but fine-tuned to the stricter requirements of the automotive industry particularly with respect to full product and component traceability over the entire automotive supply chain. TS16949 norms and specifications apply to the design, development, production, and when applicable, installation and servicing of automotive products.
Dominikus Hierl, chief marketing officer at Telit Wireless Solutions, said:
“Achieving TS16949 certification is not only a major milestone for Telit but also for the M2M module industry which now becomes a full member of the demanding automotive supply chain.”
“Our non-automotive customers also benefit from this certification which guarantees that everything we do is subject to the strictest rules of quality and process management, including the value-added network services from our new business unit m2mAIR.”
Industry’s only pure-play m2m, Telit creates value by partnering with customers to provide expert guidance and support from concept development through to manufacturing quickly bringing ideas to market in all application areas including the new “smart” space. With service enhanced products in cellular, short-range, and satellite-navigation easily bundled through high-level software interfaces, Telit-powered m2m devices cost less to integrate, maintain, operate, and update with lower price points for bundled products and savings translating into competitive advantage at the time of sale and throughout the operating life of the customer device.
