MultiTech Debuts IoT SocketModem Cell for 4G-LTE Cat 1

New Variant of Top-Selling End Platform Modem Ideally Suited for Long Lifetime, Lower Bandwidth IoT Applications.

MultiTech Systems, Inc. today announced a 4G-LTE Cat 1 version of its award winning SocketModem® Cell, the industry’s top-selling operator certified, embedded, end platform modem.

The new device offers peak upload data rates of up to 5 Mbps and download data rates of up to 10 Mbp and is ideally suited for long lifetime IoT applications that require lower data rates (2G replacement) as well as and battery- or solar-operated devices.

“OmniMetrix has used MultiTech cellular devices (2G, 3G, and LTE) for more than a decade, with great success,” said Harold Jarrett, Vice President and CTO, OmniMetrix LLC. “The new Cat 1 SocketModem allows us easy migration at a cost lower than building our own module.”

The new LTE Cat 1 device will be available for connectivity to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile as well as Canadian operators. Shipping in volume November 2016, samples are available now for qualified customer projects. The SocketModem Cell is a complete, ready-to-integrate, high availability embedded device offering 4G-LTE, 3G-HSPA+, Wi-Fi, GSM, CDMA and now LTE Cat 1 functionality.

These quick-to-market communications devices allow developers to add wireless communication to products with high reuse of hardware footprint, software integration and certifications, thereby minimizing development time and expense. The SocketModem Cell modems are based on industry-standard open interfaces and use MultiTech’s Universal Socket design.

Daniel Quant, VP of Product Management at MultiTech, said:

“Users of the new LTE Cat 1 device will benefit from a lower cost, competitive with 2G GPRS or 1xRTT devices, as well as reduced power consumption when compared to earlier LTE devices designed for broadband data speeds.”

“We will continue to support and innovate solutions that support emerging cellular industry standards providing our customers with a wide range of options for their varied communications requirements.”

Key benefits of MultiTech’s Award Winning SocketModem include:

  • Interchangeable communications devices
  • Carrier-approved as an end device (customers do not have to go back and re-certify their device like they do when integrating a cellular module)
  • Quick-to-market
  • Easy migration to future networks
