How businesses can implement IoT to restart during COVID-19

By Piyush Jain, founder and CEO of Simpalm.

The world has faced a great crisis in the form of COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020. The pandemic disrupted the manufacturing, supply chain, and other business processes globally by forcing people to maintain social distancing and self-isolation to limit the spread of the virus. Companies are trying to adjust to the circumstances of the pandemic. It can not be easily predicted as to when the world’s workforce will return to work, thus businesses are finding alternative ways to continue their operations remotely. The uncertain time also made businesses realize the potential of technological intervention in the business processes, there are many technologies helping businesses to operate in the crisis. IoT (Internet of Things) has been the most useful technology for businesses; it has been the driving force behind the industry 4.0. It is helpful in the continuation of operation with fewer employees on the site.

Remote employee collaboration

IoT-based digital communication system helps employees to collaborate remotely, it enables operations to be executed with fewer employees on the site. For example, the US tier-one supplier is using a manufacturing execution system (MES) to bring efficiency and transparency. The MES provides valuable output used by managers for important discussions in videoconferences. There are many other IoT-based solutions available to leverage the collaboration of employees remotely.

Supply chain

Supply of material and components especially those with are highly labor-intensive have been disrupted due to lack of labor at work. Companies with a labor-intensive supply chain can implement IoT-based solutions for the smooth and transparent flow of material and components with fewer men power. For example, many companies are moving towards IoT devices for warehouses, GPS for routes, and digital formats of delivery paper-processes. IoT is uniquely positioned to help companies with reducing the manpower for the supply chain and bridge the widened demand-supply gap.

Manufacturers can make the use of IoT-based solutions to restart the process during the crisis, as many of them have been shut down globally due to a lack of manpower at work. Companies can handle the situation by implementing various solutions such as remote monitoring of production setup and machinery. Video conferencing for real-time effective collaboration, machine learning software to perform automated tasks, and more. These IoT solutions help manufacturers to ensure the continuation of processes while having social-distance principles in place.

Cybersecurity is becoming critical due to IoT adoption

IoT devices generate numerous amounts of data that are stored on the cloud, these data are used further in decision-making processes such as predictive maintenance, changes in strategy, etc. Data generated by IoT devices are helpful but they pose vulnerability to cyberattacks on the other hand. For example, a health monitor tracks health-related information of the patients which is a part of the hospital’s medical records. If someone manages to hack the health monitor they can violate the hospital’s privacy policy. In the same way, every IoT device used in different industries is vulnerable to cyberattacks. There have been some cyberattacks on IoT devices reported in the previous year.

Some of the IoT Cybersecurity solutions being used by industries

To protect the system from cyberattacks, industries are using cybersecurity solutions with additional safety measures. Here are some of the IoT cybersecurity solutions:
1. BlackBerry security software services.
2. Cisco IoT solutions and services.
3. Subex IoT security coverage from real-time monitoring to response and recovery.
4. Bitdefender BOX IoT device security.
5. F-Secure detection and response solutions.
6. ZingBox cloud-based solution for IoT.

Every business is affected in such time, back to the normal phase would take the plan and patience. IoT technology is the key enabler of digital transformation, companies can use IoT solutions to move towards the automated model of work to ensure employee safety, continuity, and flexibility. It is equally important for companies to ensure the reduction of vulnerabilities from cyber threats which are evolving due to the proliferation of IoT-based digital systems. The IoT solutions are not just helpful for the companies to restart during a pandemic but it will also remain helpful post-COVID-19.
